Like most of the great casino games roulette originated in France and eventually found its way around the world and now online. The two major components of roulette are the wheel and the table. The wheel is made up of 37 (European version) or 38 (American version) numbered slots. The numbers one through 36 are coloured red and black. The number zero is green. (American roulette also has double zero, which is green as well.) A game is played when a little ball is released along the outer edge of the wheel in the opposite direction that the wheel is spinning. The ball bounces around and eventually falls randomly into one of the slots on the wheel. You make bets by placing chips on the table according to where you predict the ball will land. Bets can be placed up to the point when the ball falls onto the wheel. The table looks like a grid and features all of the numbers that are on the wheel.

There are numerous different types of bets in roulette. There is more information on bets in our Roulette Bets page.

Roulette is all about predicting which number is going to come up next. The game is 100% luck no matter what anyone else tells you.

Roulette players have the option to predict:

  • Which number the ball will land on.

  • The outcome of bets on a combination of numbers.

  • Whether the number will be red or black, even or odd.

  • The size of the payoff - depends on how and where the bet was placed.

  • More than one type of bet or any combination of - The bets, bounded by the table limits (check what limits your table has).

 How to Play Roulette

  1. After you have cashed-in, look for a roulette table in the casino foyer (or menu). Most online casinos have American and European versions of roulette and some have multi-play, single-play, private tables as well as roulette tables with betting limits. Note: If you can't see 'roulette' in the menu look under 'Table Games'.

  2. In some casinos where they have multi-player roulette the dealer will say 'place your bets please'. This signals to players that they can place bets on the roulette table.

  3. Click on the selected chip value you want to place on the table - these are usually found at the bottom of the screen.

  4. Move your mouse over to where you want to place your bets and drop it on the spot by clicking your mouse button. If you're new to roulette we suggest you pick the lowest possible chip denomination and place it over 4-5 numbers. If you make a mistake press the Clear Bets button and all your chips will be taken off the table.

  5. If you’re playing at a multi-player casino the dealer will then say 'no more bets please' and the ball will be dropped into the spinning wheel. Note: If you're playing at a private or single table you will need to press the Spin button.

  6. The ball will slow down after a few seconds and begin jumping from slot to slot. Wherever it comes to a stand still is the winning number and if your chip is on the corresponding number on the table you’re a winner!  European Roulette

If confronted with a choice always, always play European roulette. You might not think that extra zero on an American roulette game makes a difference, but the house edge for American roulette (5.26%) is almost twice as high as the house edge for European roulette (2.7%).
