Women pile into poker
In an article in The Times today, it’s reported that women playing poker online is becoming one of the biggest growth areas of online gambling.
Three years ago the image of poker was of fat cigars and tumblers full of bourbon but with the advent of online poker all this is changing. The article features Ms Hastie a 26 year old who started playing poker a few months ago after being taught by her boyfriend. She entered her first tournament a few weeks ago. “It was really good fun. I came third out of 20 people and won £250,” she said. Ms Hastie is a member of a Chelsea based women only poker group who meet every week.
The poker group was first set up by Julian Morel, 36, who also runs Poker Girl UK. The majority of his clients are in property, fashion and PR, and prizes of a manicure and facials are not the only reason why they turn up.
“It’s the new social thing for women to do and gives them a chance to surprise their partners when they say they are going out for the night.”
The article then goes on to state that just under a third of players from PokerStars’ 3.5million users are women.
