University say ‘No’ to casino
Students and staff of the Angeles University Foundation (AUF), Philippines, have begun holding pickets in front of a casino that is due to open today close to the university’s campus.
“We cannot tolerate this, having a casino near academic institutions,” Dr. Emmanuel Angeles, AUF chancellor, told reporters.
The AUF are also planning to file a petition for a temporary restraining order against Emaja Internet Gaming, the company behind the casino.
Dr. Angeles said the casino was 153 metres from the university, 50 metres from the Philippine Women’s University extension campus, 100 metres from the Montessori School and 50 metres from two churches.
Emaja’s owner believes they have gone through all the right channels to approve the operation.
“We have submitted all the requirements. We have passed the location criteria,” said Emmanuel Jacinto, owner of Emaja.
Jacinto believed that the casino was in fact 206 metres from the AUF – a distance he said was approved by the city’s engineer’s office.
Mayor Francis Nepomuceno said he is yet to confirm that claim and he was certain that his office had not yet issued a business permit to Emaja.
