The Bill star in suicide bid over online gambling debts
It has been reported that actor Jeff Stewart, who played The Bill’s once omnipotent PC Reg Hollis, tried to commit suicide over his mounting online gambling debts.
Stewart, 53, was the longest serving member of the cast having played Reg Hollis since 1984 before he was sacked from the police drama. Minutes after he found out the news, he slit his wrists in his dressing room.
It then emerged that Stewart had racked up big gambling debts.
"Jeff is in financial trouble. He has been sobbing and there have been a lot of tears. He was semi-conscious in hospital, so he has been through an ordeal,” a source close to the actor revealed.
"He is very badly hurt and terribly disappointed about being axed."
Stewart, who was the highest-earner on the show at £150,000 year, was sacked as part of financial cutbacks. However, friends believe that his debts surpassed his wage.
