Rugby World Cup Betting Odds

William Hill are predicting that betting on this years rugby World Cup in France could break all records and exceed £50 million.

“The last World Cup was the first to exceed £10m betting turnover in total for British bookies, but this year's tournament offers far more punter-friendly kick-off times, the pre-tournament turnover has taken off, and provided that the home nations stick around until the latter stages all previous records will be left far behind”, said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.

“The down side would be if England were to crash out at the Group Stage which would obviously have a detrimental effect on interest in the tournament.”

The tournament kicks-off later today with hosts France taking on Argentina, and despite England having a less than convincing build-up to the tournament, they are still by far the biggest-backed side in the tournament with William Hill.

England are currently 20/1 to retain the trophy they won in 2003 in Australia but the all-conquering All Blacks are 4/7 favourites to win the World Cup for the first time since 1987.

Nevertheless, one confident punter from Bath wagered £2000 on England beating France in the final at odds of 125/1. However, he will be slightly perturbed at the news that England’s golden-boy, Jonny Wilkinson, has picked up yet another injury.

“The punter, from Bath, placed this, his biggest bet ever and first on rugby, at odds of 125/1 before the news of Jonny's injury was announced. He will be desperate for him to miss only the USA game”, said spokesman Graham Sharpe.
