Wayne Rooney wedding bets
After opening up a book on the first celebrities to get married, William Hill has been forced to stop taking bets on Manchester United starlet Wayne Rooney getting married first.
Initially, William Hill offered odds of 6-1 on the young scouser getting hitched to Coreen McLoughlin first out of their list, but after being swamped with bets, they were forced to slash the odds to evens before eventually closing the book on Rooney.
Interestingly, 99 per cent of the bets were placed in Manchester. According to reports, one man walked into a William Hill in Manchester and put down £1,000 saying he would take any odds they would give him. He also said he could name the date and the location of the wedding.
“Punters piled on Wayne and Coleen. Cutting the price didn’t slow the flow so we decided to cut our losses. We’re facing a £10,000 liability. One punter wanted a £1,000 bet and gambles like these are rarely wrong,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.
However, according to a spokesman for Wayne Rooney, the pair will not get married until 2008.
William Hill still has the market open, minus Wayne Rooney and Coleen Mcloughlin, with Charlotte Church and Gavin Henson favourites at 2-1. They are closely followed by Prince William and Kate Middleton at 3-1 and Zara Phillips and Mike Tindal at 7-2.
“In the new list, Charlotte Church & Gavin are the favourites but Prince William and Kate Middleton could give them a run for their money!” said Adams.
