President’s brother in gambling raid
Brazil’s president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has denied that his brother has anything to do with an illegal gambling ring after authorities raided the house of Genival Inacio da Silva.
''I don't believe that he has anything to do with anything,'' president Silva said from India, where he is on an official state visit.
“If there is a court order and his name is on it, have patience, we are all subject to investigation. The only thing I ask is that police maintain composure in their investigations so we don‘t convict the innocent and don‘t absolve the guilty.”
Police have formerly accused the president’s brother of being linked to illegal gambling and, after the search of his San Bernardo do Campo home, seized two documents.
However, Genival da Silva’s son, Edson Inacio da Silva, said that those documents were unimportant and that his father would not comment on the search.
Police have arrested as many as 77 people in a national crackdown on illegal gambling – including the arrest of Dario Morelli Filho, a friend of the Silva family.
