Poker pro brothers facing jail over ATM scam

Two professional poker playing brothers are facing time in jail after a Glasgow court heard how the pair exploited a malfunction in HBOS ATM machines to withdraw over £150,000.

Mohammed Imran, 33, and Mohammed Irfan, 36, had planned to use the cash to fund a trip to Las Vegas and participate in high-stakes tournaments such as the World Series of Poker.

The brothers, who made hundreds of withdrawals at various cash machines across Glasgow between 29 May and 1 June 2005, capitalised on the fault in the machines which occurred after the merger of Halifax and the Bank of Scotland by using an expired HBOS card.

The bank noticed the problem and traced the card back to a sister-in-law of one of the brothers.

A spokesman for HBOS confirmed that none of its customers lost any money as a result of the scam.
