18 year-old Norwegian girl wins £1M poker tournament
Annette Obrestad, an 18 year-old girl from Norway, has become the youngest ever person so win a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet after winning the inaugural WSOP Europe Main Event at The Casino at The Empire in Leicester Square in the early hours of this morning.
As well as that little piece of poker history and the coveted bracelet, Obrestad takes home the first-place prize of £1 million ($2,013,102) after overcoming many more experienced poker pros from around the globe, including Phil Hellmuth, Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan.
"I never expected to win," said Obrestad.
"I'm speechless. I really don't know what to say."
Obrestad gained her poker experience by playing online and started her career by entering freerolls. Using the handle ‘Annette_15”, she kept playing freerolls until she had enough cash to enter buy-in tournaments.
Obrestad’s win capped an impressive display by the Europeans, who overcome their American rivals to win all the bracelets up for grabs in the first WSOP to be held outside of America.
