BBC Match of the Day betting fix claim
The BBC is at the centre of a betting scandal after it seems that the result of Match Of The Day’s Goal of the Season competition has been leaked.
Bookmaker Blue Square were immediately wary when they took £100,000 worth of bets on Emmanuel Adebayor’s stunning volley for Arsenal against Tottenham in their 3-1 win over their local rivals at the start of the last season.
Normally, they would usually take about £5,000 over a period of a week. As a result, Blue Square stopped taking bets. Adebayor’s goal was third favourite at 9/1 but by the end of the opening day of the market it was down to 1/5 after the flurry of bets.
Blue Square were the only bookie to offer odds on the competition.
Match of the Day pundits Alan Hansen, Lee Dixon and Alan Shearer chose the winning goal in a private meeting last Wednesday with the decision supposed to be kept hush-hush.
"We're not saying any of the Match Of The Day team are responsible but the market seems to suggest the result has been leaked somewhere,” said Blue Square spokesman Alan Alger.
“The number of bets we were taking on Adebayor was crazy. In our experience, punters only bet like that when they know the result."
If Adebayor’s goal does win, Blue Square will lose £25,000.
