Match-fixing system to spot suspicious betting at Euro 2008
UEFA will introduce an early-warning system aimed at detecting match-fixing and suspicious betting patterns at this year’s Euro 2008 tournament.
It is the first time that such a scheme will be employed at the European Championship finals.
The system, which involves close co-operation with bookmakers, is more of a “better safe than sorry” policy as it would seem unlikely that such high-profile games would be subject to corruption. So far, the only proven cases of match-fixing have occurred in insignificant UEFA Cup games.
That said, Porto have just been found guilty of match-fixing their way to the Portuguese title in 2003/4 by bribing match officials. As a result, they have been kicked out of next season’s Champions League.
