Man United fan bet on arsenal costs £795,000
When it comes to football betting, punters usually don’t place bets on their own team for fear of ‘jinxing’ them. But had Paul Greenwood from Barnsley had more faith in his own team, Manchester United, he would be £795,000 richer.
Greenwood was doing a £10, 14 match accumulator with bookie William Hill and crossed off Manchester United at the last minute and plumped for their bitter rivals, Arsenal. In the end, Arsenal faltered to a draw at home with Aston Villa whilst Manchester United cruised to victory against hapless Fulham- costing Greenwood a tidy sum in the process.
The wretched luck Greenwood had is in stark contrast to two recent winners at William Hill – Alan Scott correctly selected the outcome of 31 football matches, netting him £6,800 from a £1 bet whilst Fred Craggs won £1 million from a paltry 50p bet.
As a result, William Hill have now launched a competition to find the ‘Unluckiest Punter of 2008’ who will win a free £1,000 bet.
"Mr Greenwood starts in pole position to win the £1,000 free bet, but I'm sure there are plenty of other customers out there who have been deprived of a winning bet for the unlikeliest reasons,” said William Hill spokesman Rupert Adams.
If you are a William Hill customer and wish to enter the competition, e-mail [email protected] with your story.
