Liverpool rout over Besiktas linked to match-fixing

Liverpool are the latest team to become embroiled in the match-fixing scandal that is currently sweeping across European football.

Their 8-0 record-breaking win over Turkish side Besiktas last month is reported to be under suspicion, according to German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, following 'frenzied betting on a high-score victory'.

However, UEFA are refusing to comment on the speculation.

“At this stage I can neither confirm nor deny the reports,” said William Gaillard, UEFA director of communications.

“There has to be a certain amount of confidentiality with these things because we could risk a source of information drying up.”

A qualifying game for the Uefa Cup between Hamburg and Honved is also under suspicion after an own goal and a last minute goal resulted in a 4-0 win for the German side.
