Liverpool Anfield could be renamed Budweiser
With the news that the new American owners of Liverpool will consider selling the naming rights for Liverpool’s potential new stadium at Stanley Park, William Hill have started taking bets on possible new names.
US tycoons George Gillet and Tom Hicks completed the takeover of Liverpool on Tuesday and admitted they will consider selling the naming rights for a new stadium.
"If the naming rights are worth one great player a year in transfer spending, we will certainly look at that as a serious option,” said Gillet.
The favourite as the new name for the stadium is the highly original Anfield or New Anfield, at 3/1 with William Hill.
However, because of the new American connections, a few interesting names are being banded around.
US giants McDonalds are at 10/1 and Budweiser are at 16/1 with William Hill, with the US beer company seeming to have attracted the most interest so far.
“We have had loads of small bets from punters speculating what the new Liverpool Stadium will be called and, to date, Budweiser is the most requested at 16/1,” said William Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.
However, if you fancy an even longer-shot than that, how about 1000/1 at William Hill on Liverpool changing their names to any one of the following: The Liverpool Yankees; Liverpool Giants; Liverpool Lions; Liverpool Pirates; Liverpool Devils; Liverpool Lights; Liverpool Cowboys; Liverpool Steelers or Liverpool Globetrotters.
