Las Vegas Sands eyes Manchester
Las Vegas Sands Corporation has confirmed their interest in operating the UK’s first supercasino in Manchester, but only if they are allowed to fully implement their business strategy.
Las Vegas Sands want to build a full entertainment complex, including retail areas, akin with their present casinos in Las Vegas and Macau. Sands are also willing to invest big in the project should they be successful.
"If we are not allowed to exercise our business plan, then we won't pursue it," said William Weidner, President and chief operating officer of Las Vegas Sands.
Weidner also reiterated a comment from a Sands spokesman last week that the company “is a builder of resorts where the casino is only part of the revenue model.”
However, the current favourite to secure the licence is Kerzner International with interest also reported to come from MGM Mirage, Harrah’s Entertainment and Ladbrokes. Potential bidders will find out in the next two months how the application process will be operated.
Meanwhile, Sands are also waiting on approval from the Chinese government for its proposed development on Hengqin Island, a small island off the south coast of China. Despite the wait, they are still willing to invest $400 million in the first phase of the project.
