Lottery winner killed

Rene Sena, a handicapped merchant from Rio de Janeiro, has been shot dead in a mugging just minutes from the shop he owned.

Sena, who won $30.66 million lottery jackpot barely a year ago, tried to fend off his two attackers who were on motorbikes but was shot dead in the struggle. The two men made off with a bagful of money Sena was carrying, police said, but the amount has not yet been confirmed.

The streets of Rio de Janeiro are becoming an increasingly dangerous place, accounting for one-fifth of the country’s total murders. Rio’s new Governor Sergio Cabral has pledged to hit criminals hard and has planned a major crackdown on crime in the city. Meanwhile, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio da Silva has granted a request for army troops to help local police in dealing with crime on the streets of Rio.
