Gambling ring member up for $1m bail

Monte Weiner, one of the 27 people arrested last week in conjunction with an online gambling ring, has posted $1 million for bail. The Las Vegas businessman stood before Queens Supreme Court yesterday accused of enterprise corruption, promoting gambling, money laundering and other charges.

Weiner’s son, Eric Weiner, is also up on the same charges and he also posted $1 million bail with both facing up to 25 years in jail.

The gambling ring, operated around the website and toll-free phone numbers, took $3.3 billion over a 28 month period by taking bets on U.S football, baseball, hockey, horse racing, and golf among others.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced last week a 33-count indictment against the 27 individuals, plus three corporations involved with the gambling ring.
