Gambler to sue William Hill over losses

Graham Calvert, a Greyhound trainer from Sunderland is attempting to sue UK bookmaker William Hill for £2 million for failing to stop him from placing bets. Graham alleges that William Hill breached its duty of care because they continued to encourage him to gamble even though he had asked to be banned from placing bets with the bookmaker as part of the company’s self exclusion policy.

Calvert claims that he lost all of his savings, amounting to £500,000. This then led to the break-up of his marriage.

William Hill is poised to fight the claims which they completely reject. The case will be heard before the British High Court in spring 2008 and if successful could lead to other claims of a similar nature.
