England v Croatia: English punters betting with their heart
Ahead of tonight’s make-or-break game against Croatia at Wembley, English punters are in no doubt there will be any slip-ups.
Ladbrokes are taking ten pounds on England for every one pound they take on Croatia. If England do win tonight and qualify for next year’s European Championships in Austria and Switzerland, then it could end up costing the bookies millions.
“We feared we’d lose revenue if England didn’t make it to Austria and Switzerland but there’s an old phrase about being careful what you wish for. Having been on the verge of despair before Saturday night’s game in Tel Aviv, England punters are as confident as ever and are keen to take us to the cleaners,” said Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison.
The best odds you can get on England to win tonight are 4/7, with the draw at 9/4 and Croatia available at 7/1. Croatia’s odds seem a little too generous for a team currently sitting at the top of the group, so if you’re English and the pessimistic sort of punter (or not English at all), then they could be worth a punt.
However, if at half-time there have been no goals, then the game could deteriorate into a training session kick about. Croatia are already qualified and a draw would see England through, so a 0-0 at 15-2 with Paddy Power could well be tempting.
