Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting: Kauto Star or Denman?
In what has billed as possibly the greatest race ever, defending champion Kauto Star takes on Denman in today’s hotly anticipated 3:30pm Cheltenham Gold Cup.
“This is everything for racing fans, and now it is almost here. Not for over 40 years has one race meant so much to supporters, and it really is just about these two stars,” said Kate Miller, spokeswoman for William Hill.
If Kauto Star, best-priced at 6/5, does prove victorious over his rival and stable-mate, that would complete a clean sweep of the Betfair Chase, King George VI Chase and the Gold Cup in the same season – resulting in a £1 million bonus for his owner Clive Smith.
However, if there is a fault in Kauto Star, it is the odd jumping mistake late on in races. Should he and Denman, generally at 2/1, be neck and neck going into the last, then expect the grandstand to erupt. Smith is nonetheless uber-confident and quite keen to beat Denman.
“We can beat Denman. We will beat Denman. I know Denman is a relentless galloper but if you look at Kauto's times, we are ten seconds better. I think we have a great chance to quell this Denman upstart. I'm excited - this is what I go racing for - to see top horses competing against each other,” Smith said.
Those words were more than echoed by Denman’s larger-than-life co-owner Harry Findlay.
"If Kauto beats us, he'll take us between the last two fences. They say no one's made all the running in a Gold Cup, but there's never been a Denman before. We know what is going to happen. Denman is going to come down the hill, Kauto is going to come at us. If Kauto Star is on the bridle and he stays, he will go past us. If it comes to a war, we will crush him,” Findlay boosted.
The tactics in the race will be left to the two jockeys, Ruby Walsh on Kauto Star and Sam Thomas on Denman.
You would be forgiven for thinking it’s a two horse race. Well, technically it isn’t. There are 12 horses in the race and last year’s runner-up Exotic Dancer could possibly provide the closest challenge, at an attractive 12/1.
