Cheltenham Festival betting tips: The big chase

If you believe the hype, then do not look any further than the big tip Denman in today’s 14.35 Royal & Sun Alliance Chase. As the day’s red-hot tip, Denman is predicted to destroy the field.

The seven-year old, jockeyed by Ruby Walsh, is unbeaten in four races over the fences this season and is trainer’s Paul Nicholls banker of the meeting and is confident his horse can overcome the memory of his defeat at last year’s Cheltenham Festival.

"He has been around Cheltenham, jumps well and the ground will suit," said Nicholls.

"We are looking forward to this and everything has been A1 with his preparation."

Denman looks in fine condition after strolling to an impressive win at Newbury last month and is 11/10 favourite. Doubters will question how Denman’s jumping will respond when put under pressure, but his form has been so impressive, those doubts are, so far, simple speculation.

Nicholls also has another horse in the race in the shape of Turko who may be worth an each-way bet at 16/1. Nicholls is also confident in expecting a good performance from his five-year old, who has won three out of his last four races over the fences.

"In addition to Denman, we have another Royal & SunAlliance Chase hope in Turko, who is in seriously good order," said Nicholls.

"He would like the ground to dry out, but has won three out of four chase starts and is a lively outsider."
