Cheltenham Festival: Racing Post Plate tips

Despite 23 runners in the 4.00pm Racing Post Plate, the race isn’t likely to be as wide-open as the numbers suggest.

Paul Nicholls’ Opera Mundi will go into the race as 4/1 favourite, closely followed by Manacadou at 5/1 with Tote Sport.

Nicholls has openly backed his novice horse to do well, who is a sleek and efficient jumper and has the best form of any horse in the race. However, although it is a largely inexperienced field, it will be the toughest test Opera Mundi has faced yet. He will have to prove his stamina but Nicholls will be hoping jockey Ruby Walsh will be able to get the best out of him.

James Fanshawe’s Revileillez is also worth a closer inspection at 11/1. Although his form has not been great after posting a poor performance at Cheltenham in the Gold Cup in December, he does know how to tackle this course.

He won the Jewson last year at Cheltenham over this very distance and the drying conditions will suit his style.

French horse Moncadou, jockeyed by Tony McCoy, is also set to feature at 5/1. He has had some impressive performances over the hurdles in France last year and may be coming good at the right time.
