Bookies expect Cheltenham Festival betting records
Bookmakers William Hill expect the betting turnover on this years Cheltenham Festival to top £650 million and make betting history.
"This is the most anticipated Cheltenham in modern history with the Gold Cup expected to be the race that stops the nation," said Hill's racing expert Kate Miller.
They expect around £165 million to be gambled each day at the event. However, should hot-favourites such as Kauto Star and Inglis Drever prove triumphant in their respective races, then it may not be all smiles for the bookies.
"Kauto Star, Inglis Drever, Noland, and Sizing Europe are our worst results, and it will be tears before bedtime if all four of the hotpots prevail. Cheltenham week can make or break our racing year, this is our Waterloo.'' added Miller.
The highlight of the week is the Gold Cup which pits two great horses against each other for the first time– Kauto Star and Denman. Both are trained by champion trainer Paul Nicholls.
Hills anticipate that the race will “stop the country” and will be the biggest betting event for years. They claim they may receive more calls in a day than the emergency services, British Gas and American Express combined – over 125,000 calls, breaking the record set by last year’s Grand National.
