Cheltenham Festival: Wednesday’s Big Race Betting

David Pipe has proved to be something of a chip off the old block. Since taking over from his father and 15-time champion trainer Martin Pipe at their Somerset stables, his record has been exemplary.

The first trainer to have 100 winners in their inaugural season, David Pipe now seems set to have his first Cheltenham winner in the form of Well Chief in today’s 3:15 Queen Mother Champion Chase.

It would complete a remarkable comeback story for Well Chief, who seemed to have his career threatened by injury and spent almost a year out before his victorious and impressive return at Newbury last month.

Punters and experts alike are finding it hard to look beyond Well Chief, with odds of 11/10 with Tote Sport. Newmill, the reigning champion from 2006, is likely to be Well Chief’s closest competition at 5/2.

However, history does not bode well for Newmill and points further to a Well Chief victory. The last seven winners of the Queen Mother Champion Chase have failed to retain their titles the following year.
