Anti-smoking boss breaks law on first day in casino

The head of the government agency responsible for enforcing Portugal’s new smoking ban has broken the law on the first day it came into force after being photographed at a New Years party in a casino smoking a cigar.

Antonio Nunes, the president of the Portuguese Food Standards Agency, said he was unaware that the ban also applied to casinos.

"We will have to look into what is in the law," he told the Portuguese newspaper Diário de Notícias.

Portugal’s smoking ban is not as strict as the rest of Europe’s but the ministry of Health did confirm that the ban covered casinos.
