Joe Calzaghe v Bernard Hopkins: Betting Preview

Joe Calzaghe v Bernard Hopkins has all the ingredients of a classic. Despite all of Hopkins’ obligatory trash-talk before the fight in Las Vegas this weekend, punters have not been swayed and are backing Joe Calzaghe all the way.

William Hill have cut Calzaghe’s odds twice already as the money keeps coming in on the welsh fighter.

“Having initially offered Joe at 8/15, we had to cut him to 1/ 2 and now we have made him even shorter at 4/9 favourite as he continues to attract heavy support to win his first Vegas bout,” said William Hill spokesman Graham Sharpe.

“If the money continues to flow in the current direction we will have a very lop-sided book come fight time.”

Hopkins, a self-proclaimed ‘legend’, is out at 13/8.

Experts seem to believe that Calzaghe, 36, will be too quick and sharp for the 43-year-old from Philadelphia.

However, Hopkins, dubbed “The Executioner”, despite having 4 losses on his record, is a wily cat.

He knows how to fight dirty and he knows what to do to win a fight. He will use any means possible that the referee will allow. And the fact that the referee is American and the judges are American has left Calzaghe a tad uncertain.

In fact, Calzaghe is more worried about any nepotism than Hopkins himself. He said: “The dangerous thing for me is that there’s an American referee and American judges…That’s more worrying than actually fighting Hopkins himself.”

Pundits seem to think the fight will go the distance. But if you think differently, here’s how you can bet on the outcome with Ladbrokes.
