Brits are biggest gamblers in Europe
With the rise in the popularity of online gambling, a new study has reveled that the U.K is becoming a nation of internet gamblers, with over 1 million people regularly logging on to internet betting sites. With over 3.5 million gamblers in the whole of Europe, U.K players account for approximately one third of this number.
The Government plans to make the U.K the centre of internet gambling industry and will address the problems of the industry and its regulation today in a 32 international summit, hosted by Culture Secretary, Tessa Jowell.
The U.K is looking to lead the way for the industry and from next September online operators will be allowed to run their business from British bases, as opposed to current law that specifies that online firms must operate from offshore locations, such as Gibraltar and Antigua.
However, the government is fully aware of the responsibility that accompanies this decision and Tessa Jowell is keen to affirm that they will do all they can to ensure the industry is well regulated and protects the vulnerable.
'Our message is that those who are prepared to sign up to tough codes for the protection of children, protection of the vulnerable, keeping gambling fair and crime free and welcome to register onshore in this country. But they will have to abide by the very tough social responsibility codes on which the Gambling Commission are currently consulting.'
