ACE! Boris Becker starts career as a poker pro
Boris Becker, the German tennis legend and multiple Wimbledon winner, has embarked upon a career as a poker professional, according to a report in a German daily newspaper.
"I have already been playing intensively since last year," the 40-year-old told Die Welt.
"What fascinates me about poker is the psychology: what is my opponent thinking of me and what do I think of him.”
Becker, who has signed a sponsorship deal with Pokerstars.com, learned to play poker whilst on tour in his playing days, using rain breaks at Wimbledon as an especially opportune time to practise (he probably played more poker than tennis then).
Becker is also curious as to how his past rivals would compare at the tables.
"I would like to know how people like Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl or even Jimmy Connors, manage to keep their cool at poker," said Becker.
Becker’s first tournament appearance is expected to be at the European Poker Tour Dortmund next spring.
