Betting expected to soar at Euro 2008

Bookmaker Ladbrokes is expecting betting in the UK and Ireland on this month’s European Championships to reach record levels of £350 million.

That monumental figure is despite the failure of any of the home nations reaching the finals in Austria and Switzerland but Ladbrokes have put it down to the growth in online betting.

"No home team qualification means we won't have the patriotic betting we would normally see, but the growth of online betting, betting on football and the increasingly international reach of bookmakers mean it will still be a record Euro 2008 for the industry in terms of turnover,” said Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O’Brien.

Tournament veterans Germany are current favourites at 4/1, closely followed by perennial underachievers Spain at 5/1 and current world champions Italy at 7/1.

Jackpot’s tip has to be Portugal at 7/1. If Christiano Ronaldo can reproduce anything like his form for Manchester United this season, then the Portuguese will take some stopping. Not forgetting players such as Deco, Simao and Quaresma; Portugal have attacking players that will strike fear into any defence.

Paradoxically, with all that creative talent, Portugal have long-suffered from a lack of a quality striker to match the talent behind him. That may mean Ronaldo playing up front instead of his usual position on the wing.

But that will be no problem for Portugal as they have more wingers than you can shake a stick at and not forgetting Ronaldo finished top scorer in England this season with 31 goals in the league and 42 in all competitions.
