Betfair get Aussie green light
The online betting exchange Betfair has today won the right to offer bets to Western Australia (WA) customers after the High Court in Australia rejected Western Australia’s anti-betting exchange legislation.
In an unanimous decision, the court said the legislation provided an uneven playing field with regards to competition, closing the market for just bookmakers and TAB.
Betfair, which runs its Australian operations from Tasmania, said it looked forward to welcoming back its 1600 customers registered in WA.
“We’re very pleased with the result and we’re sure our customers will be delighted,’’ said chief executive of Betfair’s Australian operations Anthony Klok.
“Apart from the lifting of an unfair commercial restraint on our business, it opens the door for us to establish a formal relationship with the Western Australian racing industry.”
