Betbrokers face £1 million payout
This weekend’s F.A Cup game at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Macclesfield Town is the classic example of a David and Goliath clash, and should David be victorious again, Betbrokers have announced they will give the £1 million winnings of a bet they placed at Blue Square to the underdog. That payout would be the largest ever in the UK on a single event.
Betbrokers are the gambling equivalent to stockbrokers who vow to give punters the best odds possible and have put £15,000 on Macclesfield Town at odds of 66-1 for an unlikely win. Betbrokers are also paying £10,000 on travel expenses to get Macclesfield supporters to the game.
Betbrokers chairman Wayne Lochners said: "We've built a risk-management product that allows Macclesfield not only to enjoy being able to beat a team as good as Chelsea but also to see significant financial returns, all within the spirit of the Football Association."
Blue Square must now be beginning to worry, with a Macclesfield Town win now at odds of 25/1. Chelsea are not playing at their best and Macclesfield town, under new manager Paul Ince, have won eight out of their last sixteen games.
Steve Tucker, trading director at Blue Square, remained calm despite the potential huge loss.
"We were delighted to take this bet. The FA Cup is all about underdogs and grass roots football. The trading team and I will nervously be watching the TV to see if Paul Ince and his players can pull off one of the biggest cup upsets in recent times."
Even so, an upset remains highly unlikely given Chelsea’s millions and multitude of talent, with their players earning as much in a week as most Macclesfield Town players would earn in a year.
