ASA bans Spiderman slots ad
An internet ad for gambling website onlinegamblerweb.com that depicted a cartoon image of Spiderman was banned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) today, as it was deemed to be of “particular appeal to children or young persons”.
The ASA recognised that the ad had not been specifically target at children, as it ran on the MacFormat website, which has an average reader age of 41. Nonetheless, they concluded that it was in violation of advertising regulations and should not be shown again.
Littlewoods, who founded onlinegamblerweb.com in conjunction with Future Publishing, argued that a single complaint in the three year history of its ‘Marvel Hero’ campaign was not representative of public opinion. It is unclear at this stage what repercussions this decision will have on other similarly themed ads in the future.
