British tourists arrested in Turkey for playing Bingo

Bingo was ‘unlucky for some’ British tourists in the Turkey. As they innocently played bingo at the Sunshine Bar, in Altinkum, police raided the bar and arrested 30 bingo players.

Seven ‘unlucky’ British tourists were amongst those arrested. They were then taken to the Altinkum police station for questioning.

There was a ‘knock at the door’ after four hours of questioning, when they were each fined 117 YTL (£42) and allowed to leave. The owner of the bar has been reported to the public prosecutor for allegedly allowing illegal gambling without a licence. Top prize in the bingo game was a free drink.

“It was completely and utterly stupid. We were all having a fun time and then the police turned and forced us to fill out forms,” said one British tourist.

“We thought we were on Candid Camera until we were hustled into a van and taken to the police station. Even several hours after the incident, I am still in shock that I could now have a criminal record in Turkey for bingo. It just feels really weird and I thought it was a joke.”

Ali Katirci, head of the district, said the gambling was against the law and bingo falls under that umbrella.
