21 movie could start blackjack rush to casinos
The upcoming film, 21: The Movie, based on the best-selling book Bringing Down the House by Ben Mezrich, is expected to raise the interest in blackjack at casinos, just as a handful of books and films about the game have done so in the past.
The film, starring Kevin Spacey, Jim Sturgess, Kate Bosworth and Lawrence Fishburne, is about a group of mathematically-gifted MIT students led by a math professor (Spacey) who use card-counting methods at Las Vegas casinos to take the house for all they can.
The release date for the film in the US is this Friday and casinos expect an increase in interest with copy-cat players attempting to imitate the successes of the film.
Even though there is nothing illegal about card-counting, it is more than frowned upon by casinos. If they suspect a blackjack player to be card-counting, you can be sure a tap on the shoulder from a big man in a suit will soon follow, politely asking you to take your business elsewhere.
However, casinos will be hoping that people will see the film, think they can card-count already, and then ‘bust’.
