100 Year old man wins £25,000 bet
Alec Holden, Epsom, Surrey, is the grand age of one-hundred years old today and as a reward, he will pick up more than a birthday card from the queen.
For the optimistic pensioner bet £100 with bookmaker William Hill at odds of 250/1 10 years ago that he would live to see his century, netting him a cool £25,000. The ex-engineer puts his endurance down to eating porridge everyday and “remembering to keep breathing”.
However, as time ticked towards his one-hundredth birthday, Holden became more careful about the things he would do and where he would go.
“I've been very careful about what I've been doing in recent months. If I saw any hooded groups from William Hill standing in the street, I avoided them,” he said.
Meanwhile, the big payout, their third of its kind, has now led bookie William Hill to rethink their approach to these types of bets.
"When we started taking these bets, 100 years old seemed to be an almost mythical landmark and we were prepared to offer massive odds,” said a spokesman for William Hill.
"But these age wagers are starting to cost us a fortune and from now on we are going to push out the age to 110."
