€40,000.00 Reward for Information
Jaxx.de, a German online gambling site offering sportsbetting, horse racing, online casino games, scratchcards, and several types of lottery games, was the subject of blackmail last week. Hackers blocked the site with a ‘distributed denial-of-service’ (DDoS), and demanded 40,000 euros ($49,151). The blackmailers’ letter demanded a Western Union transfer, and said that if the money is securely in their hands, the attack on the site will stop immediately. The letter also said that a competitor of the online casino site had already paid off the blackmailers.
Jaxx.de, which is operated by Fluxx AG, a company based in Hamburg, Germany, decided not to yield to the blackmail, and instead called the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) and the German Bureau for Security in Information Technology (BSI) to report the attack. The online casino company offered a 40,000 euro bonus to anyone with information leading to the arrest of the blackmailers who are assumed to be in Eastern Europe. In addition, Jaxx.de apologized to their customers for any inconvenience and promised bonuses to regular players who were blocked from the site during the attack. The Jaxx.de staff assured customers that the data, including personal and credit card information was in no way compromised by the attack.
