Gala Casino staff raise money in memory of colleagues

Gala Casino Sunderland

Employees at Gala Casino in Sunderland's Sunniside Leisure Complex have been busy organising fundraising events in honour of two dearly departed colleagues.

In 2012, both Dorothy Foster and Rob Hunter passed away suddenly within weeks of each other after being diagnosed with cancer.

Dorothy and Rob's colleagues were left feeling devastated, but decided that raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support would be a fitting tribute to the pair. Since then, the staff of Sunderland Gala Casino have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into organising charity events such as bag packing sessions and sponsored runs, and also invited visitors to the club to leave donations.

According to the casino's administrator, Stephen Cummings, "both Rob and Dorothy were popular members of the team." Mr. Hunter, the club's maintenance engineer, was diagnosed with liver cancer in 2012 and died within weeks of his diagnosis. Ms. Foster was on the management team, and she passed away shortly after her colleague whilst suffering from multiple cancers.

Astonishingly, the casino's employees have raised around £12,000 for their chosen charity to-date, which will help Macmillan's nurses and therapists care for those suffering from cancer in their day-to-day lives. Macmillian's fund-raising manager for the Sunderland area thanked the team for all their efforts, and said that "without the help and support of the public," they would not be able to continue to do their good work.
