With the 2010 Mercury Prize due to be presented tomorrow, Paddy Power’s market for outright winner makes for interesting reading. Paddy Power makes Paul Weller favourite, listing him at 6/5 for his album ‘Wake Up The Nation’. His nomination comes a whole 16 years after his first nomination for the same award, when the prize went to M People.
Other front runners, according to Paddy Power, to win the award are the XX, Wild Beasts and Laura Marling who are listed at 7/4, 11/2 and 8/1 respectively. Previous winner Dizzee Rascal has also been nominated for the award, but is considered the second least likely to win the award being listed at 40/1.
What makes the Mercury Music Prize such an interesting award to bet on is that it has a reputation for being awarded to artists considered to have only outside chances. For this reason, making longer bets can be worthwhile and with all twelve acts nominated being both talented and popular, the award could go anyway. The shortlist of acts for the prize consists of Paul Weller, The XX, Wild Beasts, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, I am Kloot, Villagers, Foals, Biffy Clyro, Corinne Bailey Rae, Dizzee Rascal and Kit Downes Trio.
